30 Before 30!
April 15, 2008 by John

I found a site called 43 Things and it allows you to join a community and list 43 things you want to do. You can also comment on other people’s lists and say whether or not you’ve already done what they want to do. It’s a fun read that in some way gives you the courage and motivation to do the things you list, because the net can now see it. Putting these ideas to paper(or on the web) gives them weight, and they can’t be forgotten as easily, so you pay them a little more attention and eventually get them done. Snooping through the site, I found one user, a 29 year old female, who for her upcoming 30th birthday, decided to do something fun and unique. She will do something new every day until her 30th birthday! That’s 365 new experiences!
And I think that’s a great Idea.
So I am going to try the same thing! However, I am severely short on time as my 30th birthday is under 30 days away
, so I’ll improvise!
I’m going to try 30 new things in my 30th year! Now while some of the list items are as easy as tasting new food, some are rather involving and some are things that have hung around my head for years. If you couldn’t tell, today’s post ties into yesterdays very well. Now I do have lifelong goals that won’t be listed here, because as stated, these are goals I want to accomplish in my 30th year! Plus, these goals have been chosen to fit seamlessly, OK with a gentle nudge here and there, into my new life as a Dad, so we’ll see how it all turns out!
You can see my list so far by clicking below. If you have any suggestions, by all means let me have ‘em!
It’s a fun exercise to do, you might be surprised at what pops up, plus it kind of puts things into perspective. Do you have anything you’ve always wanted to do?
In no particular order:
- Reconnect with old friends
- Write a book
- Get into better shape
- Swim in the ocean
- Stay up all night and watch the sun rise
- Cook a recipe with duck
- Stop judging people
- Stop Procrastinating
- Go hiking
- Travel to a US state I’ve never been to
- Play Guitar
- Learn Photography
- Read a classic novel (Moby Dick, The Catcher in the Rye, A Christmas Carol)
- Volunteer
- Take a cooking course
- Watch my top 10 favorite movies in one week
- Ask for forgiveness…
- And forgive someone
- Keep in touch with my family
- Learn new software
- Program for fun!
- Reduce my carbon footprint
- Throw more parties
- Take more pictures
- Begin the steps to having my own business
- Try 10 new restaurants
- Build up my confidence
- Learn to Dance (Swing)
- Worry less and have fun
- and most importantly… Be there for Melissa and Sam

I think that making a list like that is a great idea. I have a bunch of goals I want to do before I die (and who knows when that will be), and I should probably write them down.
On a side note, you’re turning 30 this year?? Damn, how come so many of my friends are turning 30!? I feel so… young! ;P
For your birthday, you should:
- Throw a party
- Cook a recipe with duck
- Reconnect with old friends
- Stay up all night and watch the sun rise
then
- forgive the drunk who threw up on your couch!
Do It man! Write the list and confront those goals! Kill procrastination now!
Yes I’ll be 30! Only 35 more years and those RRSPs are MINE! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!
And, yes, for my birthday I will try and do all of what you mentioned…so I’ll start now, and forgive you in advance
Hi John…..Wow 30 ….time does go by fast! ….but you don’t look a day over 28! ;o)
Your list is great….although the hiking part you can scratch out ….remember we went hiking together in the Dunes . Next year you will be swimming in the ocean in Florida (which I thought you had already done when you went to walt disney)…..so that is 2 down. You always forgive Mike….so that is three down….
How about bungee jumping or riding a motorcycle??
No doubt you will be there for Sam and Melissa…that’s a given!….like you always are for your family and friends. That is why we love you so much.
Birthdays are just like golfing….forget the score and just keep swinging Johnykins!!!
Heya Cindy!!!!
Thanks for the compliment, I think! I remember when I was 21 people would be amazed and say I looked 25-26 years old…and I’d be happy to hear it… now?!?!… well I’d be happy to hear it again
About my list, you’re right on the hiking one! I’ll have to update the list. As for swimming in the ocean, we didn’t go near an ocean when we went to Disney…no time, so it’s still a valid item
You made me laugh out loud on the Mike comment…!
Got to get back to work, but thanks for the veeery kind words Sis
Made my day!
